Captain William Wharton 1785 – 1855, one of Wellington’s “ Spanish Infantry”

Captain William Wharton’s military obituary records that he took part in the Walcheren Expedition with 85th Regiment of Foot (Bucks Volunteers) in 1809, and was present at the Siege of Flushing. He also fought in the Peninsular Wars at Fuentes d’Onor and Badajoz with the 85th in 1811. He took part in the Stralsund Expedition under Major General Gibb in Swedish Pomerania with 2nd Battalion of 73rd (Highland) Regiment. He served with them in the Netherlands during1813-14, and was present at the Battle of Gohrde in Hanover. He fought with 73rd in the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo in 1815, and was severely wounded at Waterloo. Continue reading
