Not at all sure what records are held at Apsley House - I think the National Archives at Kew will be more productive. If you can find out which regiment your ancestor was with then the muster rolls will maybe tell you exactly what he was doing, i.e. with the regiment or detached for other duties, etc. If you have not been to the NA before then you will need a photo ID (eg driving licence or similar) and a domestic bill with your name and address on it. With that you can obtain a reader's card, takes minutes, and then access the vast library of documents.
If your ancestor was at Waterloo then if you can supply details of regiment etc then I would like to pass you on to a body of people who are trying to assemble 200 direct descendants of Waterloo men to coincide with the 2015 bi-centenary.

I think your first contact has to be English Heritage who manage the house. I think you will have to have a pretty special reason for filming there but if you make a good case then they might just be persuaded.

I unfortunately neglected to mention that according to old family stories passed down the generations, a Welshman, named Thomas, was about to be
court martialed for not maintaining the shoulder to shoulder formation, and had found himself behind the Spanish/French battle line killing the Napoleonic troops. Within the family, the first Duke made Thomas his bodyguard, and so he was served by my grandfather's great, great grandfather. So I want to make this in part, a recognition of my own family's part in history. If there is any thing of my forebear about the Museum, I would appreciate know more.

Thanks again,

Rick Myers

Who could give me permission for filming at Apsley House? I am covering aspects of Russian History, Napoleon's impact, and how the Russian Campaign set-up the eventual Allied victory, under your ancestor's leadership.

Thank you for your assistance,

M. Richard Myers III

To get the full story may I suggest you read Mick Crumplin's book: Guthrie's War, a surgeon of the Peninsula and Waterloo, published by Pen and Sword, 2010, ISBN: 9781848842458. Mick is a retired surgeon and a world authority on medicine and surgery of the Napoleonic era. It's a fascinating book and a really good read.

Glad you like it, I'll be adding a whole list of re-enactnent groups some time today, complete with contact details and, where applicable, websites. In the coming days and weeks I'll also be adding details of overseas groups, so it will be worth watching this site.
